«A universal receptacle of artistic knowledge, the Louvre houses an extraordinary cross section of the most important works of art created over a period stretching from antiquity to the early decades of the 19th century. Through analysis of the individual works and their relationship to other masterpieces from the history of art, this stunning book provides the insights and interpretation that allow the reader to make a true journey of exploration into the history of humanity's figurative culture. At the same time it reflects the intent behind the arrangement of the collections and the layout of the museum, which is conceived, in its new organization, as an immense manual of the styles and schools of every age. The process that led to the creation of the Grand Louvre spans centuries. Added to the first important nucleus of France's collection were the acquisitions made by Louis XIV, the Sun King, and the collections of Cardinal Mazarin and the banker Everhard Jabach. Louis XV began to think of the Louvre as a «palace of the Muses» in which masterpieces would be systematically assembled, conserved and displayed to the public. But only with the French Revolution did the Louvre become a true museum, a «national gallery» receiving a considerable quantity of new acquisitions, fruit for the most part of the wars fought first by the republic and then by Napoleon. With the Restoration, the looted countries regained possession of some of the stolen works, but many of them remained in Paris. From this time on there was no further letup in expansion of the museum, and when the Louvre was made the national museum in the 19th century its greatness was universally recognized.»

Picasso: The Great War, Experimentation, and Change examines the work that Pablo Picasso made in Paris during the tumultuous years of World War I. Focusing on Picasso's oeuvre from 1912 to 1924, when he utilised both Cubist and classical modes in his art, this fully illustrated catalogue highlights one of the most important periods in the history of modern art. Picasso's shifts in style became a means of not repeating, in his words, the same vision, the same technique, the same formula. With that approach in mind, the book also includes the work of Picasso's peers and friends, artists who were also exploring themes relevant to the difficult times in which they lived. Published to accompany a major exhibition of the same name at the Barnes Foundation and the Columbus Museum of Art, this elegantly designed book is essential reading for all those interested in Picasso's work and the dramatic and innovative period of art history during the Great War.

For decades, the story of the world's first space-faring nation has been underplayed in the West. Now, for the first time, the remarkable account of Russia's space programme will be brought to light. This book accompanies a landmark exhibition at the Science Museum, London, which represents a major collaboration with the Moscow State Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics and the Federal Space Agency, Roscosmos. Cosmonauts: Birth of the Space Age offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see objects that have never before left Russia, including rockets that launched the space age, actual craft that carried humans into space, the spacesuits, equipment and personal mementos of those who flew, alongside stunning artworks that articulated Russia's longing for space. But this is far more than simply a book of exceptional objects; it is also a book of incredible stories. These are the stories of the people who dreamt of early space exploration, those who made it happen, those who risked their lives to experience it and those who continue its legacy today.
